Castello di Vicarello is located in the Maremma region in the South West of Tuscany less than an hour from Siena and Grosseto and 90 minutes from Pisa and Florence.
Situated on a secluded plateau overlooking the Ombrone river, the Vicarello estate was originally an early Etruscan settlement, then the location of a Roman Spa. In 1112 the very first stones of Castello di Vicarello were laid and the castle constructed to act as a fortified stronghold. The original tower and surrounding buildings have been lovingly restored by the Baccheschi Berti family and remain largely authentic architecturally. The castle features stonework, wood beams, architraves, courtyards, brickwork, frescoes, terracotta floors and impressive vaulted ceilings. Castello di Vicarello is now one of Tuscany’s most exclusive boutique hotels.
A unique design-led style and sense of relaxed elegance can be found throughout the interior of Castello di Vicarello. Each of the 8 rooms has been carefully styled with furnishings and materials that work in harmony with the original architecture. Antique furnishings rub shoulders with contemporary artwork.
Grand stone fireplaces give the castle a welcoming atmosphere, as do sumptuous leather sofas, velvet armchairs, Persian rugs and abundant vases of handpicked flowers. Contemporary pieces of art, modern sculpture and ceramics give the interior a fresh, vibrant and somewhat eclectic aesthetic. Personal touches such as animal hides, organic linens, antique silverware, animal skulls and exquisite Venetian glassware all create an atmosphere that exudes an unmistakable sense of ‘Tuscan Country Chic’.
With an ancient castle as backdrop the gardens at Vicarello pay gentle homage to the property’s exceptional location and further add to the sense of timelessness. Swathes of manicured lawns and terraces surround the main tower with banks of climbing roses and aromatic plants such as rosemary and lavender adding to the romance of this spectacular Tuscan garden.
